Aldrin 0.10 "Venus" modular sequencer/tracker released
aldrin.png Aldrin is an open source modular music sequencer/tracker for the GNU/Linux operating system that is similar to Buzz Machines (for windows) link in interface and function.

This new version, codenamed "Venus" includes many new features and improvements, possibly the most noteworthy being integration with the Freesound project ( link ) that allows users to browse and download free sound samples with ease!

Nice software! Check out the Aldrin announcement page for more information: link

Google's Avant window manager: OSX like bar for Gnome
gnome2.png Beautiful little bar for linux from the coders at Google.

Some of the future features:

wrote ...
ere's a list of features/items that I am currently working on:
  • Try and window icons directly from Xorg, rather than through libwnck. - fixed in svn, needs testers.
  • Move to GObject code, especially for the icons (apps).
  • Change icon rendering + animations to cairo (for smoother animations & more stability)
  • Set-up Dbus backend to allow applications to have some control over their icon i.e. Album art for rhythmbox, progress bar for deluge/firefox, unread mail for evolution/thunderbird etc See mock-ups below.
  • Allow the bar to auto hide.
  • Allow the bar to be vertical.
  • Smart shortcuts (like Mac OS X dock), allow launching of programs & controling the launched programs window.
  • Allow the window manager to group windows i.e. group all the Gimp windows together, so they all raise when you click on the icon. (Would make glade2 development a bit easier
  • Integrate better with window managers, like the window-list applet, therefore allowing the WM to shrink windows to the relevant icon, and enabling use of tasklist-based plugins.

Ubuntu Studio: An interview with Project Manager Cory Kontros

It seems that the project has found new momentum with new leadership and I thought I would take a closer look for myself. After hanging around in the project’s IRC channel for a bit I got to chat with “_MMA_”, short for “MetalMusicAddict” (his handle on the ubuntu forums), who it turns out is Ubuntu Studio’s Project Manager! Traffic in the IRC was quite high as Slashdot and and Boing Boing also decided to carry the story as well but I did get Cory Kontros, also known as _MMA_, to take a bit of time with me for a quick interview on the status of this upcoming project:
